The Slaughter of American Horses: A Disturbing Truth

It is a shocking truth that tens of thousands of American horses are annually transported to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered for human consumption. These horses, who are not raised for food, often receive medications that are explicitly prohibited for use in meat products. Despite this alarming reality, the slaughter of horses for human consumption persists due to legal loopholes that enable individuals to purchase horses and ship them to foreign slaughterhouses.

Legislation for Change: The John Stringer Rainey SAFE Act

Recognizing the urgent need to protect horses from this inhumane fate, Sens. Bob Menendez, Lindsey Graham, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Susan Collins have introduced the John Stringer Rainey Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act. Supported by prominent animal welfare groups, including the Animal Welfare Institute and the ASPCA, this legislation aims to permanently end the slaughter of American horses for human consumption, both domestically and abroad.

The proposed John Stringer Rainey SAFE Act would amend Title 18 of the U.S. Code to criminalize the transportation, purchase, sale, possession, shipping, and receipt of horses with the intent to slaughter them for human consumption. The bill also establishes penalties, including fines and imprisonment, for those who violate the law. By taking a firm stance against horse slaughter, this legislation seeks to safeguard the lives and well-being of these beloved animals.
