TREAT Your Horse

Let’s talk about treats! Who doesn’t like getting a great-tasting treat now and then? Odds are, you like it just as much as your horse does! Giving treats to your horse-friends may be a way to show them love, but should also be done in moderation AND with the right foods. Check out our list of safe and unsafe items to guide you along the path of healthy treats.

SAFE (in moderation):

  • Celery

  • Carrots

  • Apple slices

  • Strawberries

  • Raisins

  • Melon

  • Grapes

  • Cantaloupe

  • Fenugreek

  • Chamomile

  • Mint

  • Beetroot

  • Turnips

  • Parsnip

NOTE: Not every single fruit and vegetable make a suitable treat for horses. Foods that tend to produce intestinal gas or that belong to the “nightshade” family should be avoided.

AVOID:

  • Onions

  • Potatoes

  • Tomatoes

  • Cabbage

  • Brussel Sprouts

Along with taking these lists into consideration, there are also great pre-made commercial treats that your horse will love, and only included ingredients that are safe for eating.
